My lips are incessantly dry, which is such a pain in the ass. I drink plenty of water, moisturize frequently, and believe I treat them right, but they will chap and peel if I’m not careful. And winter time is the hardest time for my lips. The cold, dry air doesn’t do them any favors.
I can’t do basic lip balm. Toss that EOS and Chapstick crap outta here! I need something with extreme moisture.
Lips don’t have oil glands. And being always exposed to environmental factors and lip licking can dry out the thin skin barrier. Add in cold, dry weather and you have the ultimate recipe for chapped lips and irritation.
Finding the best lip balm has become somewhat of an obsession for me. You will always find *at least* 3 different brands in my purse. It’s something that I’m very aware of, as I never want to feel that pain of splitting lips again.
So, how do I keep them soft and moisturized in the winter?
I exfoliate my lips about 3 times a week to buff away flakes and dead cells. I prefer sugar scrubs because they gently exfoliate and condition. You never want to use anything abrasive on your lips. The skin on your lips is more than half as thin as the skin on your face – sometimes even three times as thin!
I’ve gone through lip product after lip product trying to find the perfect balm for me. Through all my hits and misses, I keep going back to these three beauties. They are my holy grail, and sometimes I’ll use all 3 in the same day.
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask
This product changed my life! My lips didn’t know what soft was until I met Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. It contains agave nectar and jojoba oil to hydrate and improve texture. Although it’s marketed for night use, I use this in the morning and throughout the day. They also have various colors if you don’t want to do basic clear.

Skinn Cosmetics Lip 6X Balm
Looking for heaven in a jar? Meet Skinn Cosmetics Lip 6X Balm. I pop this on immediately after my morning shower and I am good until lunch. Not only are my lips quenched and replenished, they appear more plump because they are so hydrated! This comes in various shades, but the clear version has given me the best results.

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil
If you want an extremely moisturizing product with a lipgloss shine finish, Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil has your name written all over it. Sure, it’s not a balm, but this lip oil drenches your lips in hydration and contains a blend of hazelnut and organic jojoba oils. The oil hugs your lips and adheres for hours, so no need to reapply until lunch.
Don’t forget the SPF! Just like your face, lips need sun protection year round. Before you step outside, layer an SPF balm on top and reapply as needed. I use Carmex because I can buy a 3-pack for like $5. Just like adult Advil, I’ll keep a balm at home, in my purse and in my office.
LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask
If you don’t like thick balms but still need something that packs a punch, Lip Sleeping Mask is going to be your best bet. It absorbs quickly and helps lock in moisture. You can absolutely use this throughout the day, but I like using it before bed since it wears off pretty quickly for me in the daytime.

The environment takes its toll on your pucker. Exfoliate, moisturize, and apply SPF for hydrated lips. My favorite lip balms are Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask Skinn Cosmetics Lip 6X Balm, and Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil. I can’t do basic balm. Say no to Chapstick.
